Gloucester Cathedral

When Edward II, who was murdered at nearby Berkeley Castle in 1327, was elevated to the status of saint and martyr, his tomb at Gloucester became a center for pilgrimage. The funds, which attended such fame, were sufficient by 1331 for the work if improving the old Norman building to be initiated. The stylistic recasting of the south transept at Gloucester proved to be the starting point of a new trend in England Gothic which has been called Perpendicular.
