Glastonbury Abbey. Somerset, England.

The ruins of Glastonbury Abbey in Somerset, England. This photograph was taken, most likely by Elaine, while the Steinbecks were living in Discove Cottage and working on the retelling of the King Arthur stories. From at least the 12th century the Glastonbury area has been associated with the legend of King Arthur, a connection promoted by medieval monks who asserted that Glastonbury was Avalon. In 1191 the monks alleged the discovery of King Arthur and Queen Guinevere's tomb in the cemetery. The figure in the far ground is standing by the plaque describing the tomb. See photo 3-065.
