Pa Joad from The Grapes of Wrath, vol.1 p.241, illustrated edition, by Thomas Hart Benton, a native of eastern Oklahoma, who was assigned to draw archetypal Oklahomans for 20th Century Fox as the studio believed that would make the casting more accurate. "He wore a black, dirty slouch hat and a blue work shirt over which was a buttonless vest..His face, squared by a bristling pepper and salt beard... Over old Tom's unwhiskered cheek bones the skin was brown as meerschaum, and wrinkled in rays around his eye-corners from squinting."
