Goodrich Castle
The north side castle of Goodrich castle is built on the summit of a steep escarpment rising over a 100 feet above the banks of the river Wye on the borders of South Wales. Its two southern sides are protected by this quarried moat, which provided building stone for the enlargement of the fortification. The corner towers rise from square bases laid on the bedrock, becoming round towers at their full height. The gatehouse tower incorporates a chapel, and was defended but approach works (a barbican with walls and a draw bridge over a further moat) in addition to its own defenses.
