Exhibited: The Beethovens on the Rhine (2020). Exhibition text: During his teens Beethoven received violin lessons from Franz Ries, the concertmaster of the court orchestra. Ries was also a friend of the family, and when Beethoven’s mother died in 1787, Ries provided the family with money and help. Ries’s son Ferdinand later became a piano pupil and close friend of Beethoven’s in Vienna.
