Wells Cathedral
The west front of Wells was the final achievement of a rebuilding which began in 1174. The front itself is later; it was begun in 1225 and went on for fifty years under the supervision of a Master Mason, Thomas Norreys. The figures are arranged in seven tiers. Their positions and identities were decided by the best authorities of the day, including the bishop, Jocelin of Wells, who was the brother of Bishop Hugh of Lincoln.
