Sixth Subscription Concert at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, February 11, 1841
Program for an all-Beethoven concert at the Leipzig Gewandhaus conducted by Felix Mendelssohn, who was conductor from 1835-1847, with Ferdinand David as concertmaster (though they are not named on the program). The performance included the Leonore Overture no. 3; the Kyrie and Gloria from the Mass in C, op. 86; the Violin Concerto, op. 61, played by Jérôme Gulomy; and the Ninth Symphony. The performance was also to include An die ferne Geliebte sung by "Herr Schmidt," but according a letter from Mendelssohn to his sister Fanny, the singer was taken ill and Wilhelmine Schroeder-Devrient was asked to fill in during the event: "In the middle of the first part, David said, 'I see Madame Devrient.' She had arrived that morning by rail and was to return the next day. So, during an interval, I went up to her, was vastly polite, and she agreed to sing Adelaide. Thereupon an old piano was carried into the orchestra from the anteroom. This was greeted with much applause, for people suspected that Devirent was coming. And come she did, in a shabby travelling costume, and Leipzig bellowed and shouted endlessly. She took off her bonnet before the public and pointed to her black pelisse, as if to apologise for it. I believe they are still applauding. She sang beautifully ..."
