Abingdon Mill

The early ordinance that abbot and prior should sleep in the dormitory had long since been abandoned, and fine lodging houses had been built for their use as early as the thirteenth century. The Abbot of A bringdon's parlor chimney may be seen on the left with its Early English lancet openings, rising from his substantial lodge. Monastery income came chiefly from land rents, but as these began to fail from lack of husbandmen, the abbey mills became of more importance. So too did other sources of revenue, especially the payment of rents in kind.
