Hampton Court Palace
Although Henry VIII's scheme for enlarging the palace included the addition of wings to the north and south portion, his first major improvement was the building of his Great Hall within the second enclosed courtyard; this replaced Wolsey's earlier hall. Immediately behind the hall is the Great Watching Tower which provided a guardroom between the hall and the state apartments.
