Saint Martin-in-the-Fields
The delicacy and grace of the ornament has a musical perfection as it grows from its source at the Corinthian capital, but such pretty work as this enjoyed a short vogue. The failure of the Baroque was due mainly to the time, when the Whigs saw law and order threatened by Stuart claims and the Baroque seemed to be in total disregard for the imposed rules of taste. And on the continent, the Baroque was associated with the Catholic Counter-Reformation and with absolute monarchy.
