West Kennet Long Barrow

The starting point of English architecture may well lie further in the past than this example of an early burial chamber, one of the largest of its kind in Europe. The whole construction consists of a long mound of earth covering a core of stone, with a burial chamber at one end. Special emphasis has been given to the entrance, which is marked by this series of large stones set in a slight curve.
