  • Kalkbrenner was a younger contemporary of Beethoven who, like him, studied composition with Antonio Salieri and Johann Georg Albrechtsberger. Although he was one of the most famous pianists of his day, he was an aging and ill composer who had retired from performing at the time the album was being compiled. His Scherzo, titled “L’Echo,” displays his trademark virtuosity; he is “credited” with having introduced the technique of writing long and rapid octaves in both hands. This Scherzo is just one of his more than 200 compositions for solo piano that are rarely heard today.
