Beethoven was sixteen years old when he lost his mother to tuberculosis. During his brief stay in Vienna where he famously met Mozart, Beethoven received word from his father in Bonn that his mother’s health was failing and that he should return home immediately. After his return to Bonn Beethoven’s mother lived only two more weeks, dying on July 17, 1787. Her infant daughter Maria Margaretha Josepha died a few months later. This photograph dates from around 1932, when the grave of Beethoven’s mother was rediscovered after having been regarded as lost.
