The geometric problems of adding an octagonal to a rectangular plan were very difficult to solve and only by the addition of smaller marble shafted columns in the center was a satisfactory scheme developed. A cluster of abandoned vaulting ribs may be seen on the left and one of the two additional columns to the right.
