A further advance in vaulting was made when the nave came to be roofed to complete the building. The span between ribs was further reduced by the construction of additional tierceron, ribs forming sheaf of structural members springing from the piers to the ridge, Tierceron vaulting, invented at Lincoln, was to be fully exploited in the coming centuries.
