This panoramic view of Bonn from across the Rhine, dating from the 1830s, shows how much the town had developed by the end of Beethoven’s life. Steamships, which began operating in 1816, were now the main method of transport. Note the windmill on the northeast edge of town. This structure was built in 1700 to replace the old windmill destroyed in 1673. It is situated on a small hill (Mühlenberg). The new mill eliminated the need for the old mills, which were often rendered useless during floods.
