  • Dealer description: "Schindler's benefit had been arranged for some weeks and Beethoven had promised to participate, but in the event his place was taken by J.N. Hummel and the evening became virtually a Beethoven memorial concert. It opened with an unidentified Grand Overture by him 'performed on only one previous occasion,' leading into a one-act comeay, Der Vorsatz, followed by another Overture 'written by the immortal Beethoven for the opening of the Theatre in Pest and which had not yet been heard here' (i.e. Opus 113 or 117). The six other items include an aria sung by Marie Schindler, a movement from a piano quintet by Hummel performed by an ensemble including the composer, Franz Weiss, Joseph Böhm and Joseph Linke (all old friends of Beethoven and the last two torch-bearers at his funeral ten days before); a vocal quartet by four of the seven court singers who had sung outside Beethoven's house on the same day, and to end, a piano improvisation by Hummel. On Hummel's visit to Beethoven on March 13th, Beethoven broached the subject of Schindler concert: 'I promised to take part myself but now nothing is likely to come of that, so I should like you to do me the favor of playing.' The program accordingly bears the following announcement: 'It gives ... Herr Hummel particular pleasure here to be able to fulfill the wish of his immortal friend Beethoven, who requested him to support [Herr Schindler] at this benefit concert in his stead.' It was the last item on the program, billed simply as 'Freye Phantasie,' that made the greatest impression: 'Hummel improvised in an obviously exalted mood' on themes from Beethoven's works, including the allegretto from the Seventh Symphony and 'most movingly on the Prisoners' Chorus from Fidelio;' 'the public knew why he was there and both the performance and its reception proved truly inspiring'" (sources: Grove and Thayer).
