Steinbeck's Friends on a Boat
On-board the Grampus, a 10m-long boat belonging to Jack Calvin (artist for Sea of Cortez) & Sasha Kasheverov-Calvin. Joseph Campbell is in the center, Ed Ricketts is far right.The others are unknown. On top of the Grampus is the Nakwasina, the 5m-long canoe that the Calvins had paddled from Tacoma, Washington to Juneau, Alaska the year before (see National Geographic 1933 July). Grampus is a common name historically used for the orca and is a scientific name for the genus that includes Risso's dolphin as its only species, and is also the name of a boat sunk by a whale mentioned in Moby Dick.
