The Perpendicular belonged to a structural appreciation of the forces working in a lightened roof and wall. They also gave an uplift to the space which they defined and allowed a unifying visual network to embrace the whole interior. It was a system which looked forward to the framed building of the twentieth century, though it lacked the monolithic nature of the modern structural cage.
