'Black Fashion Show from 1990s to 2023' exhibit poster
In the early 1980s through the 2000s, Black fashion shows were typically held for the purpose of fundraising and social banquets for the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), Black Student Union (BSU), and Black Academic Excellence Center (BAEC). Since 1990, the enrolled black student body has decreased from 1.5% and maintained 0.8% of the 22,287 undergraduate and graduate students in 2022 (Cal Poly Institutional Research). However the legacy of resilience to reclaim cultural spaces at a predominately white institution has persevered through the decade at Cal Poly. In 2022, Craft by Jáde, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, Cal Poly alumni, Kimberley Bhunu, Laura Bente, and Sunmisola Adeyemi, introduced their vision of producing Afrocentric apparel and bridging opportunity gaps for families living in poverty in Nigeria and Zimbabwe; debuted their KAVOD collection in San Luis Obispo. Fashion has evolved into a fluid medium for autonomy as seen in Craft by Jáde using the revenue to curate and offer individualized programs aimed at ending material poverty (and the poverty of being) for families in Nigeria and Zimbabwe. Exhibit Date: May 12, 2023. Fashion and Student Trends x Sustainable Fashion Club's second annual Fashion Show on May 12th from 12-8 PM. Location: Multi-Activity Center (MAC) 043-0170.
