Lincoln Cathedral

In the early work at the east end of Lincoln is this unique experiment in vaulting. The quadripartite vault or Durham and of Wells was given to additional ribs, to form five, in place of fours vaulted areas. This quinquepartite vaulting was not visually satisfying. The reasons for its adoption are not clear, but it may have been because the choir arm of Bishop Hugh's building was apsidal in plan and terminated in the form more usual in France, known as chevet.
