Stonehenge

After about 150 years, the monument was rebuilt with its orientation arranged so that the axis coincided with the direction of the sunrise on the longest day of the year. About 80 "bluestones" were brought from South Wales 240 miles away, and were set up in a circle at the center. At the same time, an earthwork avenue was built to meet the entrance from a point two miles away on the River Avon. Most of the bluestones have since been removed, but part of this circle of medium-sized stones may be seen within the later, larger circle.
