Exhibited: The Beethovens on the Rhine (2020). Exhibition text: According to his childhood friend Wegeler, “Beethoven’s education was neither particularly neglected nor especially good.” He attended a public school, the Tirocinium, between the ages of six or seven and eleven, as was normal practice at the time. Since Beethoven’s father Johann intended his son to have a career as a court musician, he did not feel it was necessary for him to have anything more than the basic education available from the public school system. At the Tirocinium, Beethoven learned reading, writing, arithmetic and a little Latin. Beethoven did not particularly excel at school: one of his classmates later recalled that “Not a sign was to be discovered in him of that spark of genius which glowed so brilliantly in him afterwards.”
