Salisbury Cathedral

In 1217 Richard Poore, bishop of the Norman Cathedral at Old Sarum, petitioned the Pope and the King for leave to move the cathedral to a new site. At Sarum, there was continual drought, and the noise of wind on the exposed hill was so wild that it prevented proper offices being said. In 1220, work began on land beside the river at Salisbury, and within forty-six years the most complete of English cathedrals was erected.
