Many Norman chancels were pulled down and rebuilt to allow space for the more ceremonious form of worship. Wall painting complimented the new order, and the same sense that appears in illuminated manuscripts is evident. Monumental brass also becomes more widely used in country churches toward the end of the thirteenth century.
