  • The violinist Andreas Romberg (1767–1821) far outshone Beethoven as both a composer and a performer when they played together in the Bonn court orchestra. He arrived in Bonn at the age of twenty-four, having previously toured as a child prodigy and having already composed several symphonies, violin concertos, and an opera. He later moved to Hamburg and attempted to establish a career as a composer, but ultimately died in poverty and his works are little remembered today.
