Stonehenge

The bluestone circle was never completed, but in its place rose the great structure of dressed stone uprights and lintels, containing five trilithons, which remains largely complete today. These great stones were not only squared and dressed with remarkable precision, to be erected on the axis of the summer solstice, but the uprights were provided with projecting tenons to receive the lintel ends, and the outer ring of lintels, which is curved in plan, has tongue-and-groove joints. Two of the uprights shown can be seen have retained their tenons.
