Gloucester Cathedral
The new work was carried up to a height of 86 feet. Norman columns were cut back to give a face on which the new piers, running right up to the lierne vault above, were secured. Windows and wall surfaces are visually integrated by the use of these vertical shafts; structural strength is obtained by horizontal transom which, without breaking the perpendicular line, divide the load-baring members into shorter lengths.
