Cathedral at Durham
When the rectangular bay system was continued in the nave, the use of the semicircular diagonal ribs led to a choice between making up the difference in height at the intersection of the vault and the transverse arches, or raising the arch head. In the event the Durham builders raised the head of the arch to follow the logical line of intersection- and invented the pointed arch.
