Exhibited: The Beethovens on the Rhine (2020). Exhibition text: When Beethoven was no older than ten, he received violin and viola lessons from a young court musician named Franz Georg Rovantini. Rovantini was distantly related to Beethoven’s mother, and for a time he lived together with the Beethovens in the Fischer House. Beethoven, Rovantini and their fellow resident Tobias Friedrich Pfeiffer sometimes played trios together in the Beethovens’ apartment. Rovantini was highly respected and sought after as a teacher, though his life was cut short by dysentery; he died on September 9, 1781, at the age of twenty-four.
