John & Elaine Steinbeck watch a performance in what Elaine called the 'Village of the Music.' This was the headquarters for the U.S. aid operation in the north of the country. Pop Ewell is in background. Ewell was a American Farmer who devoted his life to the Meo tribespeople of Laos. He founded the village of Sam Thong and brought in a Hospital and school.
