- Mendelssohn’s Variations serieuse is by far the most substantial and worthy contribution to the album, and is still a standard work in the virtuoso pianist’s repertoire. After initially declining to take part, Mendelssohn eventually decided that he would contribute a new work of some depth and substance. A review of the album in the December 6, 1842, issue of the Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung back-handedly praised Czerny’s nocturne as “a beautiful piece, by far better than most we have gotten from him lately,” and singled out the Mendelssohn variations work as the most finely crafted work of the volume. The reviewer recommended study of it “to pianoforte players of all schools, whose diligence will be rewarded.”
