Ely Cathedral

Much of the experiment of the last part of the twelfth century comes to its climax at Ely. The Celtic love of interweaving space, the Roman arch, and the newly found Norman structural skill combine in something quite unique. Experience in working stone and the need for lightening the structure led to the placing of the load on narrow columns, defensive attitude has gone, and in its place begins a welcome lightness.
