Exhibited: The Beethovens on the Rhine (2020). Exhibition text: In 1828, a year after Beethoven’s death, the musicologist Heinrich Carl Breidenstein (1796–1876) approached city officials in Bonn with the idea of erecting a monument to the famed composer in his home town. A committee was formed, but the idea languished until 1835 when serious fund-raising began. In 1840, a call went out to artists to submit designs in a competition. In 1842, the winner was announced: Ernst Julius Hähnel, a young sculptor from Dresden.
