Lincoln Cathedral

The clusters of columns in the two right hand bays of the choir, set up in 1192, were the starting point of the design. Later, when the redesigned west front had been completed, the builders returned to lengthen the choir in response to a Papal Injunction that the relics of St. Hugh be given a proper resting place. Bishop Hugh of Avalon had begun the work of rebuilding after an earthquake had demolished the earlier Norman building. His two successors had continued the work, which found its full expression in this architectural space.
