the fifteenth century, for all its troubles was a great time for setting up schools and universities, which, for their day, were fairly independent of the church. Under their influence, the Reformation and the Renaissance were hastened, and printed books spread newly found knowledge through the land. The mystery of earlier religious teaching was questioned, and England waited on a change, which for its effect on the county was to be as shattering as the Conquest, but in the meantime, Gothic art continued.
