Sutton Bingham Church
The detail of capitals at the springing of the arch in Sutton Bingham is also typical of early Norman work. The rudimentary Corinthian capital in the center, which derives from classical architecture, is outnumbered by the simpler geometric capitals on either side. Another feature of early Norman architecture was the lack of windows for defensive reasons, giving rise to large areas of wall. The walls were painted, as in the 13th century addition here or were carved in panels.
