Leroy Anderson and Julian McPhee Retrieving the 1903 Time Capsule
Cal Poly's first director, Leroy Anderson, assists President McPhee in February 1941 with the retrieval of the school's first time capsule from 1903, which was located in the cornerstone of the first Administration Building (built 1903). The time capsule's contents were carefully noted, combined with new materials, and placed in the cornerstone of the 1942 Administration Building. On the side of the cornerstone is the Masonic square and compass and the name of Orrin S. Henderson, who was the Grand Master of the Masons in California in 1903, and who participated in the laying of the cornerstone.
