Lincoln Cathedral

The Angel Choir at Lincoln was built in response to a Papal Bull canonized Bishop Hugh of Avalon, who had begun the rebuilding of the cathedral. The cavet at the end of Bishop Hugh's choir was pulled down and a new, much enlarged choir was commenced in 1255. The chapter was given a warrant to remove part of the city wall which stood in the way, and the work proceeded in a magnificent style. The New choir terminated in the now typically English manner with a large east window 34 feet wide, its space divided by stone tracery of geometric patter.
