Rollin and his outdoor mentor

Rollin and Herb Beuhle, a family friend who mentored Rollin and his younger brother, Bob in hunting, fly fishing and other outdoor skills. Rollin's own father, Rollin A. Pickford Sr. was a businessman who had little interest in outdoor activities. Herb Beuhle taught Rollin and Bob everything from tying their own flies and shooting to backpacking, camping, and mule wrangling. In the years after he graduated from Stanford in 1933 until he started a family and got serious about painting (early 1940s), outdoor activities were Rollin's main interest. During these years, he often worked at a store by Shaver Lake and lived in a cabin that the job provided.
