Bristol Cathedral
While Exeter Cathedral was being rebuilt on more or less conservative lines, a real breakaway was being constructed in Bristol. This was the reconstruction of the Norman choir, which was taken down in 1298. In its place, rose a vaulted structure borne on plain arcades 56 feet high. Both the clerestory and the triforium stages were omitted altogether, and buttresses for the vaulting were incorporated within the aisles which rose to the full height.
