Winchester Cathedral
Winchester Cathedral is particularly rich in chantry chapels, where all but one were built by its bishops. The endowment of a perpetual chantry provided sufficient land, rent, or other security for the stipend of a priest, whose office was to sing the necessary masses during the donor's lifetime and after his death. The chapel was usually associated with a tomb, as here, but not necessarily so.
