Autograph letter signed from Sir George Smart to the violinist Joseph Joachim, in English, dated August 14, 1859, from Chertsey, Surrey, inviting Joachim to his home to stay for a few days and play Beethoven violin sonatas together, possibly as well as trios with the amateur cellist Joseph Ries (the brother of Ferdinand Ries).

- My dear Sir, I hope you can repeat the pleasure you gave us, by favoring us with a visit on Thursday next (Aug 18th Ins:) and stay until the following Saturday, and that you will leave the Waterloo Station on Thursday morning: at 5 minutes to 10 precisely, by the Train to Chertsey, and not to Staines!! I long for the high gratification of again playing some of Beethoven's Sonatas with you; of course you will bring your Shaving Apparatus; + I suppose you are almost perfect in the Art of Shaving, if not, I shall be happy to give you a finishing lesson. I have inviting Mr. Joseph Ries to meet you here (he is a Brother of the later Ferdinand Ries,) and have requested him to call upon you to arrange about your going by the same Train, he is an Amateur Violoncello player, therefore if he will bring his Instrument we can have some Pianoforte Trios -- I beg you to favor me With an early Answer consenting to my request, which will give much pleasure to Lady Smart, my Daughter & Niece, they unite with me in kind regards to you -- Believe me to be yours very faithfully, George T.
