The Turtle, illustration

Illustration of the turtle from The Grapes of Wrath vol.1, p.17 illustrated edition, by Thomas Hart Benton, a native of eastern Oklahoma, who was assigned to draw archetypal Oklahomans for 20th Century Fox as the studio believed that would make the casting more accurate. This illustration is found at the start of chapter three which tells the story of the turtle as it crosses the road. "And over the grass at the roadside a land turtle crawled, turning aside for nothing, dragging his high-domed shell over the grass. His hard legs and yellow-nailed feet threshed slowly through the grass, not really walking, but boosting and dragging his shell along."
