Oral History Program Interview: Juanita Everly Price
Price was born in Payne County, Oklahoma in 1916. Her depiction of the dust storms and destruction of crops is informative. Coming to Bakersfield, California in 1936, she witnessed border guards stopping migrants. Her interpretation of race relations is fascinating, claiming "Okies" had it worse than African-Americans. She includes the kinds of foods her family ate, her short time on welfare, and what the living conditions were like in "ditch" camps. Price also disagrees with Steinbeck's characterization of "Okies" in the Grapes of Wrath. She did not witness any strikes in the 1930s or 1940s.
