Cathedral at Durham

This was the only major building designed for vaulting from its inception, and as a result of planning on rectangular bays, there were problems with the vault. It would have been possible to flatten the diagonal rib (first introduced at Durham) so as to maintain a semicircular side was span, but the Durham builders instead raised the centers of the arches and at this early date, invented the major element of Gothic style - the pointed arch.
