- Thalberg was one of the leading pianists of his day, admired for his technical skills and a rival of Liszt. He attended the first performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony in Vienna in 1824 and regularly performed the Beethoven concertos later in his career. Both Schumann and Berlioz praised his compositions. Although many other piano composers of the time imitated his style, and proclaimed that he had created a new school of piano composition. Liszt later criticized this “posing” by Thalberg: “a new school! Apparently the school of arpeggios and thumb-melodies? Who would admit that this was a school, and even a new school? Arpeggios and thumbs-melodies have been played before M. Thalberg, and they will be played after M. Thalberg again.” His Romance sans Paroles in the Beethoven album is not one of these virtuosic pieces but is more akin to Mendelssohn’s Songs without Words.
