Raglan Castle

The new guns made short work of the old castles, and brought an era to an end in which practical considerations had played the major hand in architectural design. Theirs was a different sort of architecture, no less viable than the emotive architecture of cathedral buildings. It was an architecture based on hard requirements, often tested in a highly purposeful way --by war. Something of this functional attitude was to stay forever in England's architectural make-up. Coupled with a demand for visual worth, it shaped the progress of a new component --the undefended house.
