On back of print includes a short blurb from Bibby's Annual, 1913: "Beethoven, the father of modern music, was a typical sufferer from 'nerves.' His noble and kindly disposition was liable to be clouded by fits of intense irritability, followed by volcanic explosions of passion, regretted the moment the mood had passed. The little worries of life stung him as much as the big troubles, and of both he had his share. His sensibility was greater than that of ordinary men, his skin thinner, and his susceptibilities more developed. How far this condition was part of the penalty of genius we cannot say. There is at least no proof that his music would have suffered if his temper had been more equable."
