Model of "Spire to the Sun" tower
A graceful finger of white, this "Spire to the Sun" will dominate the architectural scheme of the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition on San Francisco Bay. Four hundred feet high, illuminated in amber shading into a blazing white toward the pinnacle, it will compete in stature with towers of the two greatest bridges in the world. It is the design of Arthur Brown, Jr., F.A.I.A., chairman of the Exposition's architectural commission, who also designed the landscaped Central Court surrounding the spire. The Phoenix at the top is a traditional San Francisco symbol. This night-scene painting is by Chesley Benestell, Berkeley artist.
